Hawaii Sales Conference

The Honolulu Sales Conference 1983 was a huge affair and a turning point in the commercial breakthrough and viability of Apple.  the newly hired CEO John Sculley made rules for the dress code of the affair, which was casual but professional attire was allowed during the day and that more formal (suits, sport coats, ties, skirts, etc) were to be worn in the evening.

The notes are a mix of conservative sport coats, some ties and suits, polo shirts, women in skirts, dresses, 80's skirt or pant suits, casual but respectable design/art/computer office attire    ….    we want to feel that this is a big deal affair, especially for those in sales, promotion, and corporate people. 

the color pallet can be a range from off whites to some blacks, pretty much everything but NOT bright bright reds, electric blues and bright greens, jewel tones are ok, but must be muted and not in a giant mass of fabric.

Elegant Restaurant 1980's

The Elegant Restaurant  is set in 1980.  Men should wear suits and sport coats with the same notes as the boardroom members suits.  the waitstaff should be in crisp black slacks, white shirts, dark ties, black dress shoes, bistro aprons…..

The color palette should be rich conservative, somewhat dark and not very patterned.

Here are some shots of conservative women's wear for our elegant women.  contemporary conservative dresses will no doubt work, as the lengths in the '80's were mid knee length to mid calf, not unlike today.

West Coast Computer Faire 1977

 The Computer Faire of 1977 was the breakthrough of Apple computer and Steve Jobs professional/personal life.

We are in the 1970's so lapels and collars were big, ties were wide.  The faire was attended by computer geeks, computer hipsters, hackers of all ages and styles, science teachers and professors, business people, regular citizens, curious school kids, you name it.  

We are still in our 1970's color palette.

 

Board Member's 1980's

For the board room scenes, board members meetings, board members fretting and grumbling, and so forth.  Board Members are suit guys and gals.  The colors palette for them will be the classic:  navy, charcoal grey, greys, black suits.  pin stripes, solids, VERY quiet/sublte plaids, non-contrasty herringbone.  suits of the 1980's tended to have a 3.5" wide lapel at the peak (a bit wider than most suits today), the fabrics were stiffer than the soft fabrics of today, the shoulders were strong, the tailoring neat, clean and precise.  trousers can be flat front or pleated, cuffed or not, all precise.       White, light blue, subtle stripe, long sleeve, regular point collars, button down collars, tie bars and pins or not, cuff links or not.  Dark lace up dress shoes, well polished, black socks.  Nice dress belts. Ties are medium in width and classically conservative.

in a classic business world, the suits look between the 80's and 90's is subtle.  

In our Board Member world we should do classical conservative what is often referred to as "Brooks Brothers"

The Mac Design Team 1983-85

 When Jobs was "demoted" to the Macintosh team he found himself in a small isolated division away from the bigger more formal Apple company.  His team was quite informal and artistic.  the colors and patterns of the clothing in the photos of our real mac team are quite bright and very 1980's busy. Nothing should be too loud, but needs to feel playful and optimistic.

The Mac years are 1983-1985.
